The River

Matthew Halley & Em McKeever performing “The River” on April 1, 2013 @ Mad Buffalo Productions. Words/Music by Halley.

On the river air is heavy
but I’m feeling feather light
like the mist across the water
like a hummingbird in flight
just the river and the sun
and the day has just begun
it’s just you, this here river, and I

from its source up in the mountains
all the way down to the sea
this old river touches everyone
it isn’t hard to see
that there’s overwhelming joy
in the girls and in the boys
splashing laughing oh so merrily

there are tales of grave adventure
that travel up and down the stream
this old river’s taken many lives
it’s broken many dreams
water terrible and sweet
that will swipe you off your feel
or tempt you with an opportunity

when he sings his river song
and he taps to keep the time
and his voice is golden like the sun
an hour past suppertime
i’ll be letting out a sigh
as the color takes the sky
I just can’t seem to leave this river behind

row a while on down the river
let the water ripple by
there’s that old banjo that you brought along
and the fiddle’s lonesome cry
just the river and the sun
and the day has just begun
it’s just you, this here river, and I
